Zac and I celebrated our 1st Wedding Anniversary over the weekend. We stayed at The Allerton Hotel on Michigan Ave, where we were married, for a night and the hotel was kind enough to provide us with a small version of our delicious wedding cake from the bakery Bombon in Pilsen. I thought it would be fun to decorate our wedding cake topper (the same topper my grandparents and parents used) for the occasion…
The Anniversary Topper is really easy to make. All you need to do is wrap little pieces of paper into tiny cones, color them as you wish, and tape them to the heads of the bride and groom. For the sign, just cut out a little heart, use stickers or marker to make a the “1” or whatever year you are celebrating, and attach some sewing thread to the back.
I also made a simple anniversary card by gluing a favorite photo to a hand folded card and writing a personal message inside. Homemade cards are my favorite kind of card, no matter how much or how little effort is put into them. The traditional first anniversary gift material is Paper, so I gave Zac some books I think he’d like and a set of tarot cards. The tarot deck was a huge hit and we stayed up late into the night doing readings for each other. So fun!
We lit a candle and both made a wish for the coming year of our marriage. It was a little cheesy but sometimes I can really get into cheesy. I think it will be our anniversary tradition: get a cake from Bombon, pull out the special topper, light a candle, and make a wish. It is easy to forget your relationship with your partner when you have small children, but it is so important to make time to celebrate each other – it’s why you had kids in the first place!
